The bass is tuned to I IV V (1 4 5)
If A is one then D is four and E is five.
Not matter what note you play in any location the relative position is the same. Lets say we play the A note on the seventh fret of the D string:
G_________________________________7___________________ 4 (D)
D_________________________________7___________________ 1 (A)
A_________________________________7___________________ 5 (E)
E_____________________________________________________
