The considerations are:  What kind of music do you want to play?  How much do you want to spend?  What is your ultimate music goal?  Here are some suggestions for good a good bass guitar in different price ranges:

 

This is my number one recommendation for an inexpensive first bass for over twenty years.  For around $200 with gig bag!
